Question about Histoire(s) du cinema: has there been a restoration? How will they handle the use of SD sources?

Not sure about the whole thing but Japan recently got a Blu-Ray release of Moments choisis des Histoire(s) du cinema which you can get a look at here

I could be wrong but I don't actually think Godard "reconstructed" Moments choisis for 35mm, it's just SD video transferred to 35mm. The series proper is SD video (presumably PAL) and I imagine a BD release would be upscaled to 1080i50. The degree of manipulation involved makes a rebuild from HD sources completely unfathomable.

Yeah, Histoire(s) du cinema is just a SD video montage, even his original sources were just videotapes of films he "sampled". It needs to be enjoyed as it is, because as you say a rebuild is unrealistic, and the SD transitions and editing is wholly part of the piece anyways, much like musicians often sample vinyl records complete with surface noise and clicks and pops.

There's no reason to make a separate encode for this, you could just do it with subtitle tracks—one with narration/dialogue, one with IDs, and one with both. Anime releases do stuff like this a lot, with different subtitle tracks for various combinations of dialogue, onscreen text, song lyrics, and annotations. I have no idea why Madman limited viewers to one or the other (subtitle tracks are so small in the scheme of things I doubt they didn't have room for a third).

His answers on whether they had reached that point yet was "afraid not. I don’t think sales are up to scratch for that kind of thing yet. I think maybe if we hit 1000 members I may consider a member exclusive for something like that or La flor."

Somewhat surprisingly, he said the same answer applied to the Manoel de Oliveria restorations. I wouldn't have thought that Abraham's Valley would be much more of a commercial risk than, say, the Królikiewicz but *shrug*

Same here. I've nearly pulled the trigger on that German (?) La Flor bluray many times -- maybe I should go ahead and buy it, thus setting in motion that karmic play of a much better edition being announced once I purchase a lesser alternative.

I doubt it is this collection, but that would be an amazing coup. I know the Akerman film has been recently restored, and it would be great to get the original Assayas film and the Claire Denis film as well.

Criterion already released the Assayas film in the UK

My understanding is that the film shown in the series is a significantly different film from the theatrical release.

It's basically the exact same film as the feature cut Criterion released, just with 20 minutes of fluff cut from the start and 10 worth of shots towards the end are shortened, I don't think there'd be able to include the Assayas film if they are doing that collection.

How different are A Short Film About Killing or …Love from their respective Dekalog chapters?

I’m wondering whether AOB is a clue for the series (“All of the Boys and Girls of their Age).

I don't think I've seen this mentioned here, on other forums, or on the Discord, but "POR" could be Imamura's The Pornographers. Alongside A Man Vanishes, perhaps the second "Radical Japan" will be Imamura. I believe they would have ten films to work with if they went from 1958-1968—even more if they include the television documentaries, and stop shy of Vengeance is Mine. If I'm not mistaken, Radiance has been respectful of other UK labels, which is appreciated, but those MOC Imamuras are OOP and from the early 2010s. It seems reasonable, assuming the rights are there. Or it could just be Pornographers and Man Vanishes since they (potentially) have separate clues than RJ2 and lack blu-rays.

The Rozier box strongly intimated is surely the release to beat for 2026, already. Getting ahead of myself massively, but I hope it arrives right in time for summer.

FWIW, someone (likely Fabrice Aragno) actually approached Godard about using better sources while they were cutting one of his recent films - they made it clear HD sources were available and that they didn't have to use the low-quality video dubs he was using. Godard refused and made it clear the format was a conscious choice, not a compromise. So with that in mind, I doubt these films will ever get rebuilt, not just for practical reasons but aesthetic reasons.

Based on now-ancient memories, Killing is broadly the same film, but less graphic and with some subplots far less fleshed out, but Love has a radically different ending.

Les anges du péché is the only Bresson feature not yet available on Blu-ray, so that would be a dream release. And if they can rescue Les affaires publiques while they are at it, what more could we hope for?

The Bresson would be a dream (no idea why it has remained unavailable here for so long) but I wonder if, coupled with the SOL clue, this might actually pertain to Rohmer's Sign of Leo.
