At least we have a new mayor. Happy New Year!

1. Magalhães / Magellan [Lav Diaz]
2. EIGHT BRIDGES [James Benning]
3. Remake [Ross McElwee]
4. Nuestra Tierra / Landmarks [Lucrecia Martel]
5. 가능한 사랑 / Possible Love [이창동 / Lee Chang-dong]
6. Tender Loving Care [Mike Leigh]
7. Dead Souls [Alex Cox]
8. ხმელი ფოთოლი / Dry Leaf [ალექსანდრე კობერიძე / Alexandre Koberidze]
9. 黒牢城 / The Samurai and the Prisoner [黒沢 清 / Kiyoshi Kurosawa]

Honorable mentions:

Le Cri des Gardes (The Cry of the Guards / U.S. title: The Fence) [Claire Denis]: not among her best work, but very underrated. The film opens with two important moments, and I didn't see any critics addressing the implications of them. The first makes it clear that Alboury could have found the exact location of his brother with the help of locals, a revelation that sinks in over the course of the film, and he knows this - but finding his brother's body isn't his only priority nor the only reason for confronting those at the construction site. In memory those reasons can feel directed at us/the audience, especially when the film draws closer to the end and in desperation the lead characters ask him to drop the matter, even offering to pay him off, just so they can move on with their lives. But that's the whole point of this work borne out of anger and exhausted patience. The original and superior title ("The Cry of the Guards") refers to the imagery of the watchtower guards, the mysterious locals that see everything that transpires, and it would be foolish to think they watch in complete silence and without judgment - we don't get to walk away from the horrendous deeds we've enabled, those that suffer demand we recognize those wrongs and to hold us accountable. That brings us to the second important moment: it’s no minor detail that the meaning of an indigenous land rights anthem - by a famously politically-charged band, Midnight Oil - is lost on someone who not only sings along to every word but is unrepentant in his colonialist bigotry. Denis is fully aware of the limits of art as an agent for change, and that frustration fuels the anger coursing throughout this movie.

You Can See Everything [Nathan Fielder & Lance Oppenheim]: overhyped - what was supposed to be novel didn't feel that different from what's already common practice in mainstream and commercial documentaries, and the theoretical analysis surrounding this approach echoes what's now ancient discourse about these practices, particularly the dubious implications of them. But it's still a very entertaining movie.

Ojczyzna / Fatherland [Paweł Pawlikowski]: by Pawlikowski's own admission much of this film is invented. Virtually a complete work of fiction loosely based on Mann's return visit to Germany after WWII, it doesn't work as biography, but as a dramatization of a shared culture (and a shared identity) damaged and splintered by unforgivable deeds, it's very potent. I wish it was longer - I felt like there was more to cover - but it leaves a lasting impression.

Miroirs No. 3 [Christian Petzold]: watching the Petzold retrospective that coincided with this film's release really brings out the recurring motifs in his work, and the richest one involves people who take the place of the living or the missing. Petzold brought up Hitchcock's Rebecca in relation to Miroirs No. 3 and I know he's talked in-depth about Vertigo in the past, but it's interesting to see him work the idea across his films - he goes back to that same kernel over and over again, cultivating an entirely different film each time out.

Big hopes for Farhadi’s Parallel Tales, and praying that Spielberg’s Disclosure Day is better than the trailer makes it look!

Also, come on Fincher and Pitt. Do Cliff Booth proud.
