1304 A Man and a Woman

#1 Post by Finch »

Claude Lelouch’s Academy Award–winning international sensation is a paragon of swooning cinematic romanticism and 1960s chic. Against the rain-swept backdrop of the Normandy coast, two widowed single parents—race-car driver Jean-Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and film-script supervisor Anne (Anouk Aimée)—find themselves falling for each other. But are they ready to move on from the shadows of their former lovers? Reveling in its stars’ chemistry and unfolding as a sublime swirl of shifting film stocks, whirling camera work, and time- and space-collapsing editing—all set to Francis Lai’s unforgettable score—A Man and a Woman endures as one of the most intoxicating love stories ever told.

Surprised this isn't being bundled with A Man and A Woman: 20 Years Later; although I just noticed there was a second sequel, The Best Years of a Life, that came out in 2019, that I wasn't previously aware of.

Almost worth the price of this release alone; one of the most fun (and legally problematic) short films I've ever seen.

WB released the first sequel on DVD-R through the Archives, don’t think they had the third film though

Finally a release from Criterion I'd like to own. Isn't an UHD in France? Well, they don't talk so much, I can read French if it's subtitled, I don't know if it is. Le bons et mechants is very good. Toute une vie is very good, Un autre homme une autre femme is excellent, very good indeed, Robert et Robert is good, and Les miserables too. Viva la vie, is amazing . Le voyou is very funny, there's a lot of good films, like Un homme qui me plait (terrific ending, terrible, very sad) or that film with Candice Bergen that I don't remember how is calles.

La belle histoire is horrible and long. The other Belmondo's movie is awful... and long, that 80s one.
Review.
