FYI, Time Regained was released on blu-ray in the US by kimstim. I was fortunate enough to pick up a copy before it disappeared. I thought it looked pretty good & would recommend it if you see it.

Oh yeah, I did know about that but the mixed reaction on the forum to the screen caps gave me pause. I've got the Mysteries of Lisbon blu but his best works seem relegated to DVD obscurity (or just straight up unreleased obscurity)

Also, how much, if any, of the film is in English (I see FNAC has English noted as a primary language)?

I believe I’ve seen it twice in English on YT, but can’t commend on the DVD sorry!

From what I remember (the bulk of my dvd's are in storage), the DVD's of his that I owned were of a poorer quality at the time of their release (Facets) in comparison to other DVDs. The blu-ray was touted as from a restoration (4k?) for the film's anniversary re-release and not just an old HD transfer.

Thank you both! I have the Second Sight DVD for Time Regained, glad to hear the Blu-ray is an improvement.

I read there was a restoration of Three Crowns of a Sailor, which is great since I just watched the Blaq Out DVD which is in desperate need of improvement. I'm losing hope for more Ruiz in HD though, that Kimstim Blu-ray was 7 years ago

Excellent film. Hopefully it'll get a full-fledged restoration one of these days. (The stream appears to be a pretty raw scan with no clean-up and minimal or no color correction.)

Time Regained has been restored apparently and is playing as part of Lincoln Center's Ruiz retrospective. I hope we get some home video edition in the US that is an improvement over the legendarily unwatchable Kino DVD (which still appears to be in print!) The article gives no credit for the restoration, but the FSLC says "A KimStim release."

Oh no. I just bought the Kino at a used film/music shop. I was so proud of myself for finding it. What have I done?

If the video quality is awful, I'll just pretend that it is "the fog of memory/time".

ordered it out of both interest in finally watching this and frustration over the mostly non-existence of Ruiz in HD.

At the very least, it's good to know that digital masters exist for these films, so if any breakthrough happens in the future in terms of licensing, there are titles that can be released right off the bat. I personally would love to see Dark at Noon get restored and released. I've heard nothing but praise for it, especially its visual style that was made possible by Ruiz's transition from the 16mm television look to a more cinematic approach with 35mm.

I'm not sure there's necessarily any licensing issues. Unsure about particular titles, but I know Radiance looked into Ruiz a few years ago and they weren't happy with the available HD masters (some of which have already been released on Blu-Ray in France, including this restoration of Three Lives and Only One Death, but I haven't seen them to comment).

One that hadn't been restored was City of Pirates, but the cost of doing so was prohibitive.

How depressing, a Radiance Ruiz set would be a dream. The Raridades set is one of my most treasured possessions, along with the Blaq Out releases. It's a tragedy Ruiz's home releases have become so few and far between in the HD era.

Very depressing, especially as I find City of Pirates to be his greatest achievement, alongside Three Crowns of the Sailor.

I guess I'll have to be content with the transfers in the Ruiz DVD set. I have the bigger yellow one from Alfama Films, I'm assuming it's the same quality as what's in the Raridades set? It also has the director's cut of Klimt, which is nice to own.

Well I did get around to this on the old Kino dvd tonight - letterboxed and urine yellow - but I'm one of those strange people who can endure such things. This thread talks about restorations / blurays, but I don't think we have concluded that there is a great edition of this out there presently, have we?

I'd certainly pick it up, because this, my first Ruiz, is exquisite. I'm slooowly making my way through the Proust volumes, and this film perfectly encapsulates the feel of that 3600 page behemoth in a scant, pleasant 158min. And what wonderful Marcels we have here - child and young man. Sometimes posturing exactly as we have seen Proust in photographs. I love how the camera moves, and objects often move, creating illusions of space and time. This wonderful film might have me reading more pages per day! It really does compliment and inspire.

I thought the Blaq Out blu ray of Time Regained was pretty good-looking, but I haven't put it in the player in years, I should probably check it again. It definitely looks better to me than the Kimstim blu. But unlike the Kimstim, it doesn't have English subtitles. Pretty sure they're both out of print.

Yes, I'm really impressed with this film. Another striking aspect is the vast choreography involved in multiple crowd scenes as the camera sweeps and meanders. There's some long takes. This is a very ambitious film. Sorry - I can't stop gushing about it.

I actually saw this in a theater in its art-house run in Los Angeles back in 1999 or 2000. Stunning to see, but I don't know if I really appreciated it fully at the time. It was my first Ruiz film, my first time seeing so many of the film's great actresses, like Dominique Labourier and Marie-France Pisier. I hadn't seen Celine & Julie Go Boating yet, so I had no context for this reunion.

Mine too. I saw it at a sold-out screening at the Castro theater during SFIFF (North American Premiere?) and the audience rose to a standing ovation. I loved it and picked up the dvd as soon as it was available (but extremely disappointed with its presentation). I only discovered the (kimstim- a label I hadn't previously heard of-) blu-ray accidentally after doing a search by chance wondering what happened to it & was lucky enough to pick up one on Ebay before copies completely disappeared. Hopefully if it gets another treatment it will be a UHD. The kimstim used the new 4k restoration (which I don't recall getting any theatrical distribution) and is a significant upgrade over the dvd, but I'm sure there's still room for improvement. I also picked up his Facets dvd's, but those presentations were also disappointing.

I learned about Raul Ruiz through the old Mubi forum. Now that I'm rediscovering movies like I enjoyed them fifteen years ago I'm looking for an equivalent and this is the closest I've found so far.

So I'll gush about a few of his films I learned about through them. Hypothesis of a Stolen Painting. An art fan so obsessed with an artist he buys the mansion his paintings were based in and hires actors to recreate the paintings. Early in the movie his conclusions seem logical but the later you get the more he comes off as unhinged.

Then Suspended Vocation. A movie about a fictional movie stitched together from two movies, one pro-church, one anti-church, stitched together from the same script.

I've also seen Mysteries of Lisbon. And one where a kid goes in a time loop where first his Mom dies, then his Dad dies, then both his parents survive but he dies and he accepts this.

I really wish there still existed a forum like the Auteurs/Mubi forum before I left it where I could talk about this kind of thing.
