Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Sean Baker mentioned at a screening of Red Rocket last night that Starlet is getting prepped for a new release. He did not explicitly mention Criterion, but given his close ties…

Considering the fact that OrbitDVD implied that The Devils is being scanned by Warner, what are the odds it'll be a November release from Criterion this year?

I love Marc but is he in a position to know that? I feel like we'd hear about that from George F or someone from whatever label would end up releasing it

Did the date happen to be 1st April when they “implied” the above?jt938 wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 7:06 pm Considering the fact that OrbitDVD implied that The Devils is being scanned by Warner, what are the odds it'll be a November release from Criterion this year?

If it is just being scanned, I'd say that it too soon. I'd expect a year or two from now.jt938 wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2026 7:06 pm Considering the fact that OrbitDVD implied that The Devils is being scanned by Warner, what are the odds it'll be a November release from Criterion this year?

I will eat my Goddamn hat in the vein of Werner Herzog if The Devils actually comes out. Hold me to that.

I don't believe that the Devils will be released because of the commercial possibilities.
I do think the existing BFI disc is worthwhile and I question how much better the supplements could be.
But yes, I'll concede that someone at Warner realizing "this is our last chance to get this thing restored properly before Ellison shuts us down," is definitely a real scenario that could truly motivate the people that can make this happen to make it happen.

Without divulging the specifics, I was told Arrow Video has the rights to one of Ken Russell’s Warner titles that’s not The Devils for a UHD release. I wouldn’t be surprised if they coughed up the money for The Devils too.

Don May of Synapse said that WB told him The Devils was promised to Criterion (if it ever is allowed to be released.)The Elegant Dandy Fop wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 4:22 pm Without divulging the specifics, I was told Arrow Video has the rights to one of Ken Russell’s Warner titles that’s not The Devils for a UHD release. I'm guessing if it comes from anyone it'll come from the Warner Archive since they released The BoyfriendPraying for Savage Messiah, know it’s probably Lisztomania
on DVD and blu-ray and previously released Savage Messiah on DVD through the Archive line as well.

Yes. Incredibly, it did get a clamshell VHS release back in the day. That seems like a no-brainer for Arrow, but I love The Boyfriend and have seen it more times than The Devilsjohnnysnatchclub7 wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 9:21 pm Lisztomania was Warner Archive, too.

Criterion is co-credited with the new Citizen Ruth restoration playing at the TCM festival.
New 4K restoration by IndieCollect, in collaboration with The Criterion Collection and Paramount Pictures.

We need more Alexander Payne in the collection, including About Schmidt, Sideways and The Descendants.

Wild at Heart has a new 4k DCP available so a Criterion release can probably be expected soon.

Citizen Ruth has no blu-ray release, it's the best pick

My pick would be The Descendants, just a wildly good film.

Jonás Trueba (if only his movies were in the Criterion collection)
Any chance of Jonás Trueba movies (we need a box set) (because it's almost more than a trilogy) in the Criterion collection ?
He released during the Covid era an opus (more than a short movie); and now there was one more "The Other Way Around". It could remind in a way Richard Linklater's Before Sunset trilogy. There is a kind of Eric Rohmer's vibe, something between the best of Linklater's Before series and a bit of I.Bergman...
Itsaso Arana wrote the last one with Jonas.
My favorite is "Virgen de Agosto" (2019) - magnificent photography, poetic, great acting, moving and such a beautiful story.
It was planned at first as a digibook Blu-Ray + DVD combo in Spain as you can see on blu-ray.com but was unfortunately ultimately postponed then canceled during Covid era; thus only a DVD was released.
It's sad and almost a shame that his movie are not available on Blu-Ray (the photography is often magnificent and this movies were available through 1080 VOD releases).
Same in France (but it's our traditional way to treat the good movies : DVD only or VOB at best) despite the great success in theatres and critics.
They releases his first movie "La Reconquista" (2016) with the lovely Itsaso Arana in France in theatrical for the first time the movie makes it premiere in France. In Télérama they make a parallel with the Spanish series Los años nuevos (the same actor (Francesco Carril) is playing in this movie).
There is a retrospective of all his movies at le centre Pompidou :

Released on blu-ray (+ DVD) in Spain; the PQ is really good; and it was the only movie I was able to find it on blu-ray.
It has a tenderness that Arnaud Desplechin's fail to reach with movie "Souvenir de ma jeunesse" (which is one of my favorite last movie by Desplechin by the way); or Isabelle Carré's first movie (based on her own book) - it looks to me as if Isabella Carré was influenced by the second part of "La Reconquista" for her movie.
Really this cineast deserves to be in the Criterion collection and not only a Janus contemporary release; but a full box set.
I like Almodovar and was a fan of Bigas Lunas early movies; there is not only Almodovar.
I dream of Criteroon interviews between Itsaso Arana and Jonás Trueba.
Same for "Romería" which I really loved; no Blu-Ray at all in Spain, only a video through amazon. I was hoping a Janus Contemporary Blu-Ray release.
And in France I bet for a DVD... at best.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Just curious, is there reason to believe There Will Be Blood could be coming? I'm noticing it showing up a lot on the monthly guessing thread and wondered if this is wishful thinking or if it's been confirmed somewhere.
