Martin Scorsese infuses the classic maternal melodrama with the brash spirit of the New Hollywood in this zeitgeist-capturing feminist tale of a woman finding her footing in a patriarchal world. An Academy Award–winning Ellen Burstyn shines as Alice Hyatt, a newly widowed mother who, with her precocious son, Tommy, takes off across the Southwest to pursue her dream of becoming a singer, along the way learning to live on her own terms, even as a new romance with a rugged rancher (Kris Kristofferson) tests her growing independence. Boasting vivid supporting turns by Diane Ladd, Harvey Keitel, and Jodie Foster, this irrepressible look at starting anew overflows with warmth and humanity from each bustling frame.

This film is in some ultimate way trivial, and an overblown mess, and has a number of scenes that are undoubtedly the most execrably staged of Scorsese's career, which is mostly otherwise a serenely confident one, and yet its lots of fun and has so many throwaway moments, finely observed, that burrow into one's brain and stay there. & Diane Ladd is The Best in this.

The universe works in mysterious ways. I only learned a little while ago that we lost both versions of Flo, Diane Ladd and Polly Holliday, in the same year.

For the last thirty years I’ve had the jingle for Mel’s chili from the show stuck in my head. The staff tries to get Special Guest Star Art Carney to endorse it (as “Chili Con Carney”) but he’s uninterested and convinces them that “Chili Con Mel” has the same cadence

I never saw the TV shows it inspired, but I like this film quite a bit, definitely a lot more than Beloved Aunt. Burstyn's choice to hire Scorsese was wonderful as he brings endless ideas to this film - the opening alone, right through the moment where we see the speakers blasting "All the Way from Memphis," is one of his most glorious. And the climax hilariously suggests the second life these characters would get as a sitcom, with everyone in the diner observing the drama unfolding in front of them like it was prime time television.

I watched it recently on the channel & was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't expecting much, but it had that slow burn feel with the actors' performances elevating what might have been a mundane melodrama to a more thoughtful and inspiring production that stayed with me long after it was over. It made me think of another similar film I had just watched on the channel the night before, Nebraska, & thought of what a good double bill of middle-Americana they make.
