Not so much related to Zeitlin as Buckley, but I'm bummed that neither of you, nor anyone else on the forum I follow on Letterboxd save one user, saw The Bride!, which would otherwise surely have become this year's Collateral Beauty/Book of Henry/The Snowman/Serenity/whatever. Even though I've hated everything I've seen her in, I didn't really have a strong opinion on Buckley as an actress before seeing it, but she gives one of the worst performances I have ever seen in that movie.

I’m proud to either be that “save one” or in their company. The movie may be a good deal misconceived, and a solid percentage of that Jessie Buckley performance may be a total disaster, but I look back on both of them with only positivity. I wasn’t expecting it to have my favorite Christian Bale performance in a long time. And I sure wasn’t expecting the one-two punch of final line and final needledrop.

You are indeed that “save one.” And I won’t pretend I didn’t have a blast seeing the movie. Better that any day of the week over something more “competently” conceived that really shouldn’t exist (cf. Michael)

I've admired Buckley since I'm Thinking of Ending Things but I'm not keen on her career trajectory at this point.

International sales on Tian Zhuangzhuang's Song of the Birds are being launched at Cannes. This actually wrapped at the beginning of 2020 but was delayed first by Covid and then by censorship issues. It's a story of sent-down youth during the Cultural Revolution, adapted from Ah Cheng's novella The King of Trees (part of an informal trilogy with King of Chess and King of the Children, both of which have been previously adapted).

Oh, I know that about her - I'm more surprised by Carax's interest in her than the other way around!

Carax has ling wanted his films to make money/ secure funding and that seems reason enough to hire her.

I only know her from the Adams Family posters, but she seems to be a suitably misanthropic and somewhat curiously attractive in appearance like Carax's male leads (I don't know how to say that more kindly, though I mean no offense. I assume it's also what Tim Burton was chasing in casting her). I'm more worried that Carax get back in his zone, I found Annette to be insufferable, though I know it has it's fans.
