The French 4K of Carol is apparently an upscale, so I’m curious to know if Criterion would be willing to release an upscale themselves.

The only time they’ve done so to my knowledge is for some of the films in the Tati bluray boxset.

Those Tati SD-upscale are additional cuts. The main feature from that set were never upscaled. Then again presenting less-than-HD material on Blu-ray is pretty common, even for Criterion (Hoop Dreams, Marlon Riggs, etc.). On the other hand, to this day Criterion hasn't done 2K upscale titles on 4K except for those handful in the Wes Anderson set.

I know it’s only 1 but I expect another delay.

Half of the Wes Anderson titles in the box set are upscales, if I'm remembering correctly too.

I’m glad we got American Dream but I agree that this is a very boring lineup, especially when compared to the home-run of last August’s titles

I'm grateful for Coup de Torchon. Wonder if they'll regrade it.

Yeah its a mixed bag. American Dream, which is a big addition, but not in 4K, and one, paltry feature. Like, they couldn't even get Kopple for an interview in retrospect? The Harlan County upgrade is nice,, but strange they're sticking with the same, 20 year old cover art for the DVD.

Looking at the dates closer, some titles are definitely missing cause August 18 is missing a release. Maybe it’s reserved for the Kubrick set?

As for Coup de torchon, while I am happy to have it back not being a 4k is a disappointment.

I feel like historically August is a typically slim month, same with December. Last year was an outlier with strong August and December slates.

It does look like we're back to six or seven titles a month and that June's nine were an outlier.

I wonder if that was a contract stipulation from Studio Canal; maybe a 4K is only allowed if SC have or are about to release one in other territories. Can't have been a source issue, not when they did a Scarface 1932 UHD.

Not great when a strong month for documentaries is a weak one for supplements.

The upgrade machine strikes again, is my spontaneous take for this line-up. While I know the appeal of 4k upgrades, I do think there is a dosing issue with Criterion for quite some time now (or at least a more recurring one). If it wasn't for the Eclipse (ie non-mainline) set, only 2 of the 5 titles would have been new-to-the-collection.

I assume that they shoot for 6 releases a month and, as someone else has already speculated, they have a backlog of upgrades ready to go if a release isnlt going to be ready for their planned date..

Don't know if you're region-free, but it has been available as part of the Studiocanal Tavernier blu-ray set since 2022.

I'm not very interested in August's lineup for purchase but hope to catch the 2 documentaries on the channel at a future date.

A more appealing documentary box set would have got my attention though with a American Dream theme:

Harlan County, USA
American Dream
Roger & Me
Bowling for Columbine
The Times of Harvey Milk
(Insert another one of choice)

Wouldn't think that would be such effort from them to be a tad more creative in making these films more appealing and they have most of those already licensed.
