In all sincerity, I would be tempted by Criterion standalones of The Shining and 2001 if they were significant upgrades over the WB discs(never loved Full Metal Jacket enough to be compelled to own it for some reason), but I think I’ll have to sit out the complete set.Ribs wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 5:57 pm I expect the rest of the pages will populate with the rest of the October releases (which I would not be surpised to see include Lolita and The Shining standalones).

Didn’t they announce stand alone releases from the Anderson set at the same time as the box? I’m not as convinced any solo releases are coming

FWIW, I just checked and the first official announcement email - at least to customers - did not mention the stand-alones.domino harvey wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 8:06 pm Didn’t they announce stand alone releases from the Anderson set at the same time as the box? The original press email for the Wes Anderson set said they would follow in the September releases, but they were not put on the site until it came to be announced normally on the 15th.

Re: The Complete Kubrick
I am wondering if we get both versions of Fear and Desire here. It specifically mentioned both versions of Day of the Fight and the International cut of The Shining but no mention of alternate versions of Fear and Desire. It would be annoying to have this Complete Kubrick box and still have to hold onto that Kino release too.

Might be quite a while before standalones emerge, if in fact they ever do.

While the international version was the one I always knew, and had bever known there was a longer cut until the US DVD was released, it’s been far too long since I’ve watched it to comment.
Other than to say, it never felt like anything was missing. Seeing the US version was just a slightly different experience, kind of like watching a director’s cut of a film that’s reinstated character-building scenes that were cut ‘for reasons of pacing’.

I'm looking forward to seeing the International Cut as a curiosity; however, I view almost all of those scenes in the American Cut as essential. As you said, character building, atmosphere, and mood. Then again, I view the American Cut as a near-perfect document, so I digress.Adam X wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 8:40 pmVersion comparison.aox wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 6:56 pmI am very curious what he cut out because I find nothing superfluous in the 144 minute cut.

When would we expect a 50% discount pronotion on this set?
(When do they usually have the next big promotion?)

This looks like it would be timed to the October Criterion flash sale, so presumably that would be your first opportunity. If not, certainly for the month-long B&N 50% off sale in November.

I imagine the October sale will happen before this is released, so the Barnes and Noble sale in November will likely be the first time this is 50% off.

This is scheduled for October 20, and the rest of the October releases won't be announced until July 15th (-ish). If the two stand-alones aren't announced at that time, then yeah, they're probably not coming for a while.domino harvey wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 8:06 pm Didn’t they announce stand alone releases from the Anderson set at the same time as the box? Re: The Complete Kubrick
Also just looking at the disc breakdown of each film:
Killer's Kiss & Early Shorts: 2 discs
The Killing 2 discs
Paths of Glory 2 discs
Spartacus 2 discs
Lolita 2 discs
Dr. Strangelove 2 discs
2001 3 discs
A Clockwork Orange 2 discs
Barry Lyndon 3 discs
The Shining 4 discs (!)
Full Metal Jacket 2 discs
Eyes Wide Shut 3 discs
A Life In Pictures 1 disc
Assuming half of those are 4k/blu ray splits, The Shining being a 4 disc set is a little surprising, unless they're going to have 2 discs apiece for the US and International cuts?

Same. It's like a master baker offering to remove some cocoa powder from their brownie recipe in case you want them to taste a little less like a brownie. Not even sure why I'm supposed to want this (unless I grew up with the int'l cut)aox wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 8:58 pm I'm looking forward to seeing the International Cut as a curiosity; however, I view almost all of those scenes in the American Cut as essential. Last year the flash sale started on October 21, so it's entirely possible that they'll time it to this.dwk wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 9:15 pm I imagine the October sale will happen before this is released, so the Barnes and Noble sale in November will likely be the first time this is 50% off.

Re: The Complete Kubrick
Not sure how long the extras for The Shining will be, but it'd make sense to split the content over 2 discs. There are 18 changes between the 2 cuts, which starts to be a lot for seamless branching, but Criterion never used seamless branched to begin with. The 2 cuts combine 263 min. Better to split that (and spread out the extras).

I would be genuinely surprised if Lolita isn't coming standalone given that it's the only one to not already have an individual 4K release from someonedomino harvey wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 8:06 pm Didn’t they announce stand alone releases from the Anderson set at the same time as the box? Re: The Complete Kubrick
I grew up via the international cut on the German Blu-ray and watched it once before the Warner 4K came out. I must say that upgrading to the longer cut was slightly odd at first as the shorter one felt perfect to me but I've appreciated the film just as much. I'm very happy to get both cuts in the set, if only for the opportunity to compare them without a loss in quality.mfunk9786 wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 9:48 pmSame. Re: The Complete Kubrick
I grew up with the European cut, saw it multiple times before buying the US UHD of The Shining two years ago. I like the American version better as well but the European cut has its own merits.
Lolita, like EWS, is not a favorite Kubrick of mine, but there are going to be many irate emails to Jon Mulvaney if at least that one doesn't get its own release.
TWBB's Wong Kar-Wai merchandise comment made me spit out my tea.

Assuming B&N keeps 10-20%(??), would be pretty silly to give them the first chance to sell at 50%.DimitriL wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 9:48 pmLast year the flash sale started on October 21, so it's entirely possible that they'll time it to this.dwk wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 9:15 pm I imagine the October sale will happen before this is released, so the Barnes and Noble sale in November will likely be the first time this is 50% off.
