With gags and violence as brutal as each other, this is screenwriter Shane Black at his darkest, pushing the buddy action formula as far as it can go while director Tony Scott ups the 90s action-thriller ante to deliver a nihilistic neo-noir masterpiece drenched in smoke and neon. I’m surprised this has any cachet, unless it’s carryover goodwill for Shane Black’s other films. It’s been a while since I’ve seen this but it pretty much killed Damon Wayans’ film trajectory and he and Willis are helpless to save such a mean-spirited and utterly “un fun” action movie.

Shame they didn't make any extras about the film's tortured editing process, which is the only thing interesting about it. I guess I'm glad that the uncensored violent scenes will presumably be made available, but does anyone have fond memories of this movie?

EDIT: There was no reason to speculate. This is a Tony Scott movie, so of course half the Letterboxd highbies love it

Oh, I love this film as well. Scott was at his peak with Revenge (the theatrically released cut, which is on Tubi but not Blu-Ray), this and True Romance. One of the most genuinely shocking opening scenes I’ve watched in what is ostensibly a comedy, and there are just so many great moments, particularly when we’re first introduced to Bruce Willis.

I wish the preview cut could’ve been included in full instead of just highlights of what WB demanded cuts of

I’m amazed that Shane Black continues to work so much in the #MeToo era given that he was sued for viciously assaulting a former partner some years back

The opening scene is definitely shocking but I personally think it's also hilarious, in a black-comic (pun intended) way. It's the reaction shots that really put it over for me. I remember nothing else about the movie other than the opening credits (also hilarious), which maybe isn't a great sign. But I'll give it a rewatch when this comes out.
