Exotic Material

#1 Post by peerpee »

Dunno if this is the best place to post, but here goes…

Announcing a new UK label, EXOTIC MATERIAL. First release, working in conjunction with the Coltrane Estate for over a year, is ETERNITY’S PILLAR by Alice Coltrane. Seventeen episodes (1985-88) totalling nearly 9 hours. Encoded by David Mackenzie at Fidelity in Motion, and produced by me, Nick Wrigley (MoC, Indicator, etc). Surprise-announced and released TODAY and available now: https://www.exoticmaterial.com Thanks!

Major release!! Saw these for the first time fifteen years ago in a mixtape of random odds and ends. Excited to see what else you have for the future.

It might be a while
Exotic Material is a UK-based publisher, founded in 2025 to help resurrect Alice Coltrane's Eternity's Pillar television programme.

We are working on a number of new projects but none are currently near completion.
Also, here is a link for purchase in the U.S.

The four episodes on the Criterion Channel were thought to be the only surviving episodes until last year. They are numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4 but are actually 5, 17, 22, and 23 according to the master tape boxes (and thus the new Blu-ray).

1 = 5
2 = 23
3 = 22
4 = 17

So yeah, what is this exactly? Can someone who’s watched an episode or more describe it?

There's an episode on YouTube if you want to get an idea of it. (And Exotic Materials' trailers as well.)

Imagine one of those late-night or Sunday morning religious programs that are shown on local or basic cable channels (which is exactly what it was) but with Alice Coltrane playing the music (piano, organ, synths) and leading meditations and chants almost like it's a kind of mind-bending, hypnotic, joyful variety show with a lot of video effects. Other than that, I don't really know how to describe it.

Public Access Television in the 80s & early 90s....you probably had to have lived it to get it. 8-)
