Lanterns

#1 Post by dx23 »

Don't know if anyone else is watching this DC Comics HBO series, but Lanterns is right now one of the top shows of the year so far. A mix of detective drama with character deconstruction and some of the 86 year old lore of the DC characters, starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The third episode of the season is the best so far, breaking down toxic family relations, psychological trauma and the pressures of being black in the US among other things. Of course, it ties in with the DC Universe of films and TV by James Gunn and Peter Zafran, so we have hints of the larger scale world this characters live in as well as promise of familiar character like Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion in Superman and Peacemaker, making an appearance in future episodes.

Agreed. I'd staunchly compare Lanterns to the Watchmen 2019 series, only when Watchmen came out it was universally loved rather than having a small loud minority of toxic fans hellbent on trying to ruin it for people. Also Gunn promoted this as being a True Detective style show and man does did they deliver on that promise. Its refreshing to get a show like this again. Since there's no Plur1bus this year, i'd be comfortable in saying this is the best show of the year.
