Worth mentioning that the Heat 4K is meaningfully recut, and not just “technically improved”. The theatrical version hasn’t been seen since the DVD era.tenia wrote: Sun Oct 04, 2026 6:27 pm. Sometimes, a re-release allows him to only adjust the technicals (like with Heat's 4K resto)

The restoration itself, or the 4k disc in particular?Zot! wrote: Sun Oct 04, 2026 9:17 pmWorth mentioning that the Heat 4K is meaningfully recut, and not just “technically improved”. Not sure if I understand what you mean. I don't believe there is a digital version of the original theatrical cut of Heat available in any format or streaming other than the original DVD. The original Bluray was already edited, and then a 4k and Bluray featuring something called the "Director's Definitive Edition" came along, keeping the same cuts, but now also adding Mann's typical revisionist color grading.Drucker wrote: Sun Oct 04, 2026 9:45 pmThe restoration itself, or the 4k disc in particular?Zot! wrote: Sun Oct 04, 2026 9:17 pmWorth mentioning that the Heat 4K is meaningfully recut, and not just “technically improved”. All that said, the popular consensus seems to be to stick to the original BD for the overall increase in quality and accept the edits, as while they are memorable, they are perhaps not substantiative.
Note to Mann: if you are going to let Pacino off the leash, you can't cut his ad-libs AFTER his improvisation is already in the pantheon.

Heat's edit has changed when the 2009 BD was released. There hasn't been new additional changes when the movie was later restored in 4k, so it technically didn't introduce new changes (unlike when Manhunter got restored in 4k).

Yes, that is a fair distinction, but important to note he still purposefully tinkered with the visual appearance for the newer release, like he did for Thief.tenia wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2026 10:45 am Heat's edit has changed when the 2009 BD was released. Absolutely, but that's a distinction he made himself during his answer.

The final cut of Manhunter is very welcome because itivuernis wrote: Sun Oct 04, 2026 9:08 pm Shouldn't Mann be busy making Heat 2 instead of spending time on "final cuts" of Manhunter and Miami Vice. His previous alternative cuts just showed how the theatrical cuts can't really be improved on.
Spoiler
restores the superior alternative ending.

I shall soldier on with my Shout Factory BD where I can enjoy it in its original 480i should I ever wish to watch it for a second time.
