I'm actually tempted by the Vigo just for the packaging. I'm assuming the films look amazing.

Sorry, I have no idea about Fade to Black but it appears to be a blue category upgrade as it’s the same master VS used for their BD.

Here’s what the site reviewer at the other forum said:
If you don't own Vinegar Syndrome's slipcover or standard editions, then I wouldn't hesitate picking up Scream's two-disc set. However, if you purchased the VS, then I would wait for a sale or price reduction. While the transfer looks very good in DV/HDR10, Scream uses the same master as the VS Blu-ray. I would stop short of calling it the definitive presentation because I believe some additional restoration work and cleanup can make it look better”

Does Arrow's 4K Apartment LE not retain the same packaging/book as the blu-ray LE? It looks like it has the same essays

The 4K LE comes in a regular keep case with a slipcover.

Added Jean Vigo (Curzon) to the OP.

And we’re back up with a new design! The site runs significantly faster now.

I didn't even see this (and Dancer In The Dark) were getting released on UHD... Curzon only released them on blu only, but it did release Breaking The Waves on UHD. Any comparison or word on whether there's any improvement in UHD for these?

Dancer in the Dark isn’t out yet but it and Dogville have source limitations, so you’re “only” getting slightly better detail. Eagle’s Encoding should be solid and Dogville’s on-screen titles are apparently in English. Curzon’s Breaking the Waves is “just” SDR (thankfully) but it looks good and is a nice upgrade to the Criterion BD.

@Finch:

His Girl Friday (Criterion) - Chris' review
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arrow) - caps
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 (Arrow) - caps
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 (Arrow) - caps
The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc(Sony) - caps
Anaconda (Sony) - caps
American Pie (Universal) - caps
Daylight (Turbine) - comparison between the Turbine and Kino grades. The former is director-supervised.
The Gold Rush (Studiocanal)
Shine (Capelight)
Night of the Juggler(Radiance) - fixed the repeated shot but 1.78:1 is still the AR and they quietly dropped Kino's 5.1 upmix.
At Close Range (Cinematographe) - FiM encode
I Know Where I'm Going (Criterion)
Salaam Bombay! (Criterion)
Murder on the Orient Express (Studiocanal) - caveat: 1.66 AR which is likely incorrect but significantly better encoding than Kino's 4K and Studiocanal's previous BD
Death on the Nile (Studiocanal)
The Mirror Crack'd (Studiocanal)
Evil Under the Sun (Studiocanal)
Dust Devil (Umbrella) - comparison. The Umbrella with its FiM encode looks "blurrier" because Kino's encode filtered the grain away.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (Capelight) - caps. Better encoding than the Kino. Recommended upgrade for viewers who aren't DV compatible due to Capelight properly encoding the HDR10 base layer instead of Kino, who require a huge DV layer to "fill in" picture information from a more compressed / compromised base layer.
The Big Blue (Studiocanal / Gaumont / Sony) - SC caps. Great-looking 4K master except for DNR'd higher-gen shots such as the opening sequence. Studiocanal resolves finer detail but has encoding issues in highlights, the non-OCN shots and traces of chroma noise. Sony used a low-pass filter which makes the film look less sharp and finely detailed but the encode is more consistent.
Waterworld (Plaion) - caps
Re-Animator (Second Sight)
Minority Report (Paramount) - excellent encode!
Endless Night (Studiocanal) - only available in the German Agatha Christie 4K set. Likely the same master they licensed to Indicator a while back.
Under Siege (Arrow) - Geoff D impressions. Arrow omitted the original 5.1 track for a 2.0 and Atmos.
Pride & Prejudice (2005) (Universal) - 2K upscale.

@Fus1on:

Pearl (Second Sight)
MaXXXine (Second Sight)

Southpaw (Lionsgate)
Carol (BubbelPop) - caps and my review.

Under Siege (Arrow) - mild DNR and no original 5.1 audio, only 2.0 and Atmos but both are said to be good.

Leaving Las Vegas (Shout)

Finch, one more thing. I bought the new Catch Me if You Can 4K in anticipation of it being fine as the caps suggested but the encode is actually terrible and looks worse in motion. I’d move it from the blue tier to disappointing. I never had the film on BD but the disc holds up and has a good transfer as well. Minority Report on the other hand looks great in 4K.

for Fus1on:

David Byrne’s American Utopia (Criterion) - looks and sounds impeccable. Brilliant disc!

Strange that one Spielberg film is fine and the other isn't. I'd have thought with both being Spielberg they'd have given both to their A team but evidently not. And of course Catch Me is the one I was interested in more. I'd seen the encoding complaints last week so I never added Catch Me to the OP in the first place.

clearly it's because Minority Report's the better movie so they put more care into it :D

Heard bad things about the 2.0 backed up with frequency range screenshots showing heavy filtering. No good excuse for no 5.1 and only options of a mangled 2.0 and revisionist new Atmos remix and the lack of grain is unforgivable. Still got my LD and DVD for the better tracks expected more from Arrow.

I just read about it too, which is unfortunate but it surprised me as a couple other people who got the disc didn’t hear anything wrong with the 2.0, so it may be a situation where only audiophiles or longtime fans of the film who have the old releases notice anything wrong.

Have you seen the disc in motion and does it warrant the disappointing tier? Based on caps, I think it’s still looks like a fine upgrade despite the grain management. The old master is just terrible.

Mine has not arrived yet so I can't say but there is lack of grain in caps and the audio for sure is neutered. The LD and DVD audio are monsters so it sucks they decided to tame these like shown in the comparisons.

Not sure about the audio, but the picture probably borders disappointing at least. I found it surprisingly "meh."

A reminder that posts linking to Svet Atanasov's reviews are not allowed on this or any other threads on the main forums, including the thread created for a film in Criterion's or any other label's subforum. We have a dedicated Pro-Bassoonist thread in the Infighting subforum. I did not approve and move a new post about his Eyes Wide Shut review to the Pro-B thread because it was already discussed there.

Saw Under Siege last night and the others are right because the stereo sounds bad compared to LD and 5.1 on DVD. Picture looked ok no smearing but there is not much grain left and it feels like there should be more grain.

Imprint revealed to BR member takeshi2010 that their 4K release of G.I. Jane was made from a 35mm internegative even though they advertised that they used the original negative. The IN is two generations down from the OCN. Caps also show significantly different framing and grading. Imprint also initially announced new interviews with Ridley Scott and writer David Twohy but they were quietly dropped from the specs.

On the flip side, at least the release costs $100

So was Criterion’s Antoine Doinel box never classified in this thread?

CC’s Stolen Kisses 4K I think is a red a disc, but The 400 Blows, while perfectly fine, doesn’t seem any better than a FiM-encoded Blu-ray would. I haven’t looked at the Bed & Board and Love on the Run discs yet.

That said, Criterion’s 400 Blows 4K is probably preferable to the FiM-encoded blu rays in Europe due to the fixed gamma levels at the very least.

The BFI opted not to release The 400 Blows on UHD for precisely that reason: they didn't think it would look any better than a FiM-encoded Blu-ray.

I went with the BFI disc myself. Hoping Stolen Kisses gets a separate 4K release elsewhere. The remaining installments are fine films, but I'll probably pass on them.
