Possibly. Jarmusch loves Naruse - he's recommended When a Woman Ascends the Stairs to cinephiles in the past, and it wouldn't surprise me if he similarly thought highly enough of Daughter, Wife, Mother to pay tribute.

That would be a wonderful homage. Let's see if he mentions it in Venice this weekend. In his director's statement, he wrote:

I was afraid that might happen, but I've noticed over the past few months there have been social media accounts dedicated to going after any musician or celebrity who was considered supportive of Israel's destruction of Gaza. I only noticed them because I was taken aback by some of the harsh negativity thrown at public figures who didn't fit that description at all. In these cases, the definition for support has really broadened to a ludicrous degree that's a poor reflection of reality. In a lot of ways it's not surprising - the day after Hamas launched their attack, there was an easy consensus in the intelligence community that Islamophobia and anti-semitism were both going to spike going forward, and it was sadly predictable that individuals who were solidly prejudiced in either way were going to negatively shape the public discourse. If you follow Jarmusch's IG account, it should be obvious where he stands on the issue and how outspoken he has been, which makes this garbage being posted about him all the more moronic. Such is the state of things.

That too, but people creating and willfully spreading the misinformation are the real problem, not people who make the mistake of believing them and admit that when they're being asked.

FWIW, Art Spiegelman had a sad but hilarious moment in an interview earlier this year about R. Crumb where he discusses their arguments - one question he threw out among many was asking Crumb "why are you antivax?" I'm sure a lot of us have to deal with the same arguments now thanks to RFK and his new position of power.

I have really struggled with this Bialik issue, because A. I can't stand her, irrespective of her personal positions (which obviously make her much worse), and B. I have the utmost respect for Jarmusch, one of my favorite artists overall and someone I genuinely think I'd get along with. he has been pretty outspoken and supportive of Palestine, so this is a really weird conundrum. I'm personally just sticking with my much longer fandom and faithfulness to the director and just looking forward to the movie. if I can enjoy A Place in the Sun on the channel right now knowing Elizabeth Taylor was someone I wouldn't be able to stand on a personal level and disagree with heavily, maybe..okay, seeing Bialik in this movie is gonna be a struggle, but I'm not bringing out the pitchforks for Jarmusch, I guess that's all I'm saying. as much as I am disappointed in him for casting her

How far do you want to take this though? Take someone like Charlton Heston - he didn't just oppose gun control, he actively worked with the NRA, even vehemently advising them not to support any during private meetings immediately following the Columbine massacre. That bothers me and if he were still alive I wouldn't be thrilled to see him in a prominent film by a favorite filmmaker. James Earl Jones was also in the NRA. Per Jones, ""I am a member of the National Rifle Association, but not a political member. I just throw the political mail from the NRA into the trash. Charlton Heston campaigns on behalf of the NRA...When it comes to the right wing politics of the NRA, I don't get into that. I just believe in my right to have a gun in my house." (FWIW, he adds "Ceci [wife Cecilia Hart], on the other hand, is a member of the anti-gun lobby, so we pretty much cancel each other out.") As a member, he probably paid dues, and that can provide financial support that the NRA uses for lobbying...I wish he wasn't a member, but if he were still alive, I can't say I would wrestle with the prospect of seeing him in another movie.

Bialik has always been a terrible actor who appeared in sitcoms that I detested, so she’s been easy to ignore for me as well. Like Neil Patrick Harris, a horrible relic of my youth who just won’t fucking go away

Re: his fascination with negative reviews, he's talked about that numerous times. It's been too long for me to remember where he might've said this (either in an interview or one of his screening appearances in NYC), but there was a time many years ago (I think earlier in his career, possibly in the 1980s) when he carried a clipping of a particularly negative review around with him. It wasn't because he had a grudge or was haunted by it or anything, he just found it entertaining and wanted to hold on to a copy.

Speaking of awards, the Academy should really have given him an honorary Oscar by now.

Among North American filmmakers, Jarmusch and Cronenberg should be at the top of the list. I'd also give one to Albert Brooks, Gus Van Sant, Atom Egoyan and probably Brian De Palma (even though I'm a skeptic who doesn't share the high opinion some might have of him). None of them have ever won an Oscar IIRC.

I didn't realise he had such a difficult time on The Dead Don't Die. Now it makes sense why he took that long before making his new one and was so protective of its festival selections.

I'll admit I didn't respond to the zombie movie when it first came out, I think after such a high with Paterson the genre aspect didn't quite connect. Around this time last year though I began a rewatch of all of his films (watching Dead Man on NYE was perfect so I'm going to make that tradition now) and by the time I got to it I absolutely loved it. Everything I enjoy from him is in there so it's annoying it took me that long.

Are there plenty of screenings for Father Mother Sister Brother in the US? It finally got picked up for theatrical here but not until April. So sad.

Only in LA and NYC beginning Christmas weekend but it opens in more cities early next year.
