I wasn't aware that Gaumont was working on a restoration. I thought that they might use the MOC transfer.
Gaumont's restoration will undoubtedly be a full-scale photochemical 4K frame-by-frame job, conducted on a far bigger budget than Eureka could ever muster. I think James White did a phenomenal job, and the MoC disc is clearly definitive for now, but the transfer could certainly be improved upon, as James would doubtless be the first to admit.

Another fairly critical issue is the language of the intertitles - I suspect Criterion would favour French over Danish, not least because that's how they released the film on DVD.

I'm sure it'll eventually come, but didn't the theatrical release of this just get announced? Surely a BD would follow that, no?
It was announced as part of the Classic Cannes line-up.

Using the same trick as the last couple of months, I found that Seconds is spine #667. http://www.criterion.com/films/28428-seconds" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And To Be or Not To Be is likely #668...

Woah, happy birthday to me on both counts. Criterion is releasing so many of my personal favorites this year!

Huh? What trick? I get an error message when I click on that link.

If you go to The Devil's Backbone page and mouse over the link for spine 667, you can see that there is a page for Seconds, it just hasn't been set up yet. I'm not sure how jwd is getting the other hints.

Newly added phantom pages. First up were the cast and crew for Seconds, To Be or Not to Be, then each of the Ray films.

Thanks Swo. I remember about eleven years ago when we figured out all sorts of tricks like this on the original forum. If my memory is right, I found covers for Children of Paradise, Fireman's Ball, and Loves of a Blonde days before their unveiling. There was all sort of chicanery going on back then.

We are also getting some Fassbinder too, but I haven't figured out what it is yet.

I know it's a long shot, but if we're getting a new Fassbinder, perhaps we'll also see an upgrade of one of his other titles in the collection. While I'd like Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, I'd love Berlin Alexanderplatz.

It actually looks like it could be an early Fassbinder eclipse...

Hopefully in that case it includes a disc of the shorts.

Given the volume of what they've acquired, that wouldn't be the least bit surprising. I just have to wonder which of his titles would miss the mainline.

Hopefully films aren't being dumped onto Eclipse purely because of volume.

Volume seems a reasonable excuse for eclipsing. There's only so many Fassbinder extras you can do before it becomes repetitive.

Gods of the Plague

Unfortunately, this is looking more and more like an eclipse release. But maybe they'll surprise us with something great like Lonesome or Pierre Etaix.

I meant more whether or not the films get HD treatment.

It's telling that most of the Fassbinder they put up on Hulu is NOT HD.

That's my only qualm as well. As much as I love to see releases stuffed to the gills, I usually don't have time for more than a handful of extras. Hell, since leaving Beaver, I may have listened to only one or two commentaries.

With all of the discussion of German films in the 60s list thread, I felt a little conspicuous for not having a single one on my list (though a few came close). Fassbinder will be the main reason why my 70s list will be overflowing with them.

Ha, unless they call it The Very Early Films of R.W. Fassbinder, this thing's going to have to have like 15 movies in it. Still, all the films mentioned so far could possibly fit on a single Blu-ray disc.
