1972... My Fair Lady is a Warner film now owned by CBS. Though, the only films missing from between 1927 and 1972 are the Universal-owned Going My Way and The Lost Weekend, plus A Place in the Sun (coming to the Presents line this year) and The Greatest Show on Earth (same, coming same day as the UHD of The Ten Commandments).FrauBlucher wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 4:53 pmNice gap between 1927 and 1964Paramount Home Media Distribution has officially announced that it will release on Blu-ray Best Picture Essentials, a box set with 10 award-winning films. Re: Paramount Catalog Titles on Blu
Nice reminder Paramount proper hasn't won BP since 1997, with a film that started at another studio entirely

A Place in The Sun didn’t win Best Picture
Ordinary People is the other MIA title that Paramout has though.

Weren't UHD's from new 4K scans/restorations planned for some of those? (At least The Godfather was reported to be in the works.) If these discs are clones of the old ones, maybe this is just Paramount's way of clearing out a lot of stock.

Hope so. Really hope they do some for their Miramax titles. I could see them doing a big Tarantino box set with new UHD's.

I'll second the love for Spartan. Yet another WB title that I badly want to see upgraded. It has all the things I love about Mamet's work, but what surprised me when I originally saw it was how cracking the action scenes are. It felt like a real advance in his directing chops at the time, especially coming after the somewhat flaccid Heist.therewillbeblus wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 10:15 pmI used to get The Saint and Spartan mixed up when I was in high school (two Val Kilmer deception-thrillers that begin with S..) until I actually saw them. Now I remember literally nothing about The Saint, while Spartan remains as one of a small group of films sticking out slightly from my closest shelf to signal its status as a go-to movie for a bad day. Where's that film's U.S. blu-ray release?
It's definitely not a cheery movie, so I'm curious to know your other go-to bad day movies.

It may not be "cheery" but I don't find it not-cheery. The film is so economical and already set with fully self-actualized characters that we're simply along for the ride on their journey and not sharing responsibility for anyone's development via surrogate alignment, so by the same token I don't think the audience is meant to feel particularly bad when people die, atrocities are hinted at, etc. We're involved in a very specific way, and it's purposed for 100% old-fashioned movie fun.

We're not talking enough about how Paramount decided The Godfather Part 2 wasn't an essential Best Picture winner.Ribs wrote:A Place in The Sun didn’t win Best Picture

I thought I'd read (but can no longer find a source) that the trilogy would receive a UHD set in 2022 for the 50th anniversary of the first film.

I've heard things to that effect too, and also considering the fact Paramount+ is going to make a mini-series on the making of the first film I would imagine such a set would be good promotion for that as well.

It was in a statement from Paramount to The Digital Bits on 10/12/20:willoneill wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 12:56 pmI thought I'd read (but can no longer find a source) that the trilogy would receive a UHD set in 2022 for the 50th anniversary of the first film.
And finally today, MANY of you have asked whether Paramount will be releasing Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone on 4K Ultra HD. As you know, the studio has already officially announced the 12/8 Blu-ray and Digital release of the film. Well, we have some good news for you... Paramount has just provided The Digital Bits with this official statement on the matter:
“At this time, we will be releasing Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone on Blu-ray and Digital. In anticipation of the 50th anniversary of The Godfather in 2022, Paramount is working on restoring all films in this franchise, preparing for new home entertainment releases including 4K UHD physical and digital releases. More details will be released at a later date.”

Happy to hear this. The first two have been available individually on blu, but I've been waiting for Bon Voyage and Race for Your Life to follow.

I doubt it. They'll probably be budget alternatives priced accordingly. IIRC, during DVDs heyday, those were priced by Paramount as budget titles even then.flyonthewall2983 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 03, 2021 5:53 amDoes this mean the Criterions are soon to be out of print?

Hmmm, maybe spoke too soon!
Well, as long as a decent BD is being released by Paramount, it's not a complete loss. Like, they could do a better encode of Don't Look Now among others.

With the hope that Paramount would release more of their catalog on HD and UHD, I guess this was a “be careful what you wish for” moment. When this came out, I was going through a bit of a rough time, I went to see it with a friend and it was the first real laugh I had had in a while.knives wrote:Wait, does it have a fan base?
I'm sure I would cringe watching it again now, but I have a soft spot for it. "Emilio!"
So yeah, I guess what I am saying is I am the fanbase.

"Emilio!" is the one and only part I remember (besides the scene where they sit around eating twizzlers), but it is indeed a hilarious moment
