Jojo Dancer’s cover is pretty good
Winchester 73 is decent enough
Mother and The Whore’s cover is okay
The Grifters is abysmal.

The disc and the insert art for Scarface are so much better than the cover.

That is so often the case with Criterion. It's like they panic and go with key art that seems more commercial, not realizing that they could go for a much more striking option.

got Scarface in my possession and the booklet art clearly is the winner for me, would've made for a great cover. unfortunately the cover feels even worse in person
got it alongside Happiness and both packages just feel so flimsy. it was nice getting Pandora's Box in the flash sale and being reminded they can still "get there", much like the new Paper Moon mostly seems to

It's a good idea of Criterion's to use those cow visions, or whatever the hell they are, for the Drugstore Cowboy cover, but the execution is mediocre and doesn't really reflect what the film or even the visions are like. The cover also makes it look like Matt Dillon has a wart on his lovely nose, which he most certainly does not. (Was there ever a more beautiful man than Matt Dillon in this film? I'm thinking not.)

I like King Lear and Crossing Delancey. the other two new designs not so much...Drugstore Cowboy comes out looking like a Chuck Klosterman book cover
Punch Drunk Love still feels like a missed opportunity. that original DVD has such cool packaging even if it was a pretty bad disc

I honestly love that Performance cover as a wonderfully psychedelic little cover, I love the Cronos cover, and King Lear’s a pretty lovely design but the rest of February’s covers are just meh imo.

Glad they changed the cover for Wages of Fear to the one used for the touring posting. Truly a stunner of a cover.

Looked up Choose Me on letterboxd and the poster there matches Criterion's cover. Wages of Fear is so good that I might double dip or sell on the BFI 4K.

some of the other covers are pretty good (!) but Night Moves is a muddled disappointment. The font really sucks, for one thing (why does Criterion keep using it?). Maybe a better choice for the cover image would be a direct lift or some sort of variation on

the iconic final image, an overhead shot of the boat with a semi-incapacitated Hackman on it going around and around in circles.

With that in mind - are there any DVD covers that spoil a movie?

That Night Moves Cover looks like it’s a sequel to The Shape of Water. And yeah, the title font and its color are horrendous for this type of film.

Didn't one of the Planet of the Apes DVDs have the Statue of Liberty on the cover.hearthesilence wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 4:32 pmWith that in mind - are there any DVD covers that spoil a movie?

Including colors/font, it looks close to what I can imagine a concurrent novelization tie in would have looked like. Honestly love it, one of my favorite covers in a good while.Randall Maysin Again wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 1:02 pmsome of the other covers are pretty good (!) but Night Moves is a muddled disappointment. Just noticed that the designer of the Godzilla cover put his signature on it. I don't think I've ever seen that on a release.

I remember Lord of the Flies having a signature on the Blu-Ray cover art near the bottom righthand corner.yoloswegmaster wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 7:00 pmJust noticed that the designer of the Godzilla cover put his signature on it. I don't think I've ever seen that on a release.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol. 7
Lots of them do actually. Sometimes they’re more clever (Chilly Scenes of Winter’s artist put their name on the car license plate), but there are plenty where it’s just there. The standard Blu of Rules of the Game jumps to mind, and it goes back to the beginning - Grand Illusion is both signed and dated!yoloswegmaster wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 7:00 pmJust noticed that the designer of the Godzilla cover put his signature on it.
