I had managed to watch a VHS rip of this I found somewhere. Not a great film, but I do want to revisit it under better circumstances. The film adaptation I find most closely captures the essence of Thompson is Serie Noire, the French adaptation of A Hell of a Woman. I’d love for someone to do a good adaptation of Nothing More Than Murder (which contains a ton of inside baseball about the world of second/third tier film exhibition, and murder by nitrate film).

Pop. 1280 was adapted into Bertrand Tavernier’s terrific Coup de Torchon, re-setting it in French-controlled West Africa, which works remarkably well. A Hell of a Woman was adapted into Steven Shainberg’s execrable Hit Me.

I overall appreciate the adaptation of After Dark, My Sweet, but I don’t care much for Rachel Ward as an actress and found her badly miscast here. (One of the many reasons I’m not much of a fan of the noir remake Against All Odds.)

Ah, it’s actually Savage Night that I was thinking needed to be adapted. I thought Keith Gordon was developing it. Toro’s Lanthimos was making a new Pop. 1280/Coup de Torchon

4K Restoration of Hitler: A Film From Germany (original 1977 title, there are other titles and title cards used and I'm not clear if these were for other markets or other iterations, ie. for tv). The image looked very good and that was most noticeable in close-up shots where you can see detail in someone's face, however most of the film was shot from a distance with artificial lighting (similar to a staged scene in Derek Jarman's earlier work) so it it's not that noticeable through much of the film. The sound however is another story. The sound of original recordings was of course hampered by the quality of their source (a recording of a radio broadcast from the 30s or 40s or a record from that era). However there were a few occasions that sounded like there was damage at the end of a reel where there is noise and a bit of the audio missing at the point when new, cleaner-sounding audio is spliced in. There were also occasions in Part 3 where the audio didn't match the lip movement. At times in part 3 (but only part 3) English narration was used over the German archive audio but with English subtitles for the original German archive audio which was very disorienting (particularly if you can follow both languages) and made me wonder if the audio for that part was from a different version [English tv or international version?] may have been used. Alternatively, it could have also been a Brechtian device intended to distance the viewer and a feature of the original version, I couldn't say. More imformation on the film's production/iterations/restoration would have been helpful. The film was presented in 4 parts ending in a frozen still & credits for each, leading one to wonder if it also had been presented as a 4-part tv series (BBC is one of the credits) & if so if any changes were made to the original film to present it on tv. In the introduction, it was noted that it premiered at Cannes 1977 (Un Certain Regard) and then at Palace of Fine Arts, SF for US premiere in 1978. So it would seem that it was a film first before it (may have) aired on tv.

They also mentioned that the subtitles had been commissioned for this screening, however there were dozens of spelling errors and at one point "file 26" appeared, so it looked like AI was used for them. They clearly need work before it gets wider distribution.

A trailer is available indicating a purchaseable version on Vimeo. However it is an older unrestored German version that doesn't look to have English subtitles.
