In July 1969, the space race ended when Apollo 11 fulfilled President Kennedy’s challenge of “landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.” No one who witnessed the lunar landing will ever forget it. Al Reinert’s documentary For All Mankind is the story of the twenty-four men who traveled to the moon, told in their words, in their voices, using the images of their experiences. Forty years after the first moon landing, it remains the most radical, visually dazzling work of cinema yet made about this earthshaking event.

Release Notes on Restoration

For All Mankind
For All Mankind is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.33:1. On widescreen televisions black bars will appear on the left and right of the image to maintain the proper screen format. For the DVD edition, the picture has been slightly windowboxed to ensure that the maximum image is visible on all monitors. Supervised and approved by producer-director Al Reinert, this new high-definition digital transfer was created on a Spirit Datacine from a 35mm interpositive. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, warps, jitter, and flicker were removed manually using MTI's DRS system and Pixel Farm's PFClean system, while Digital Vision's DVNR system was used for small dirt, grain, and noise reduction.

The original Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack was remastered at 24-bit from 35mm magnetic tracks. Clicks, thumps, hiss, and hum were removed manually using Pro Tools HD. Crackle was attenuated using AudioCube's integrated audio workstation.
