Directed by: Lindsay Anderson
Featuring: Malcolm McDowell
Lindsay Anderson’s If…. is a daringly anarchic vision of British society, set in a boarding school in late-sixties England. Before Kubrick made his mischief iconic in A Clockwork Orange, Malcolm McDowell made a hell of an impression as the insouciant Mick Travis, who, along with his school chums, trumps authority at every turn, finally emerging as a violent savior in the vicious games of one-upmanship played by both students and masters. Mixing color and black and white as audaciously as it mixes fantasy and reality, If…. remains one of cinema’s most unforgettable rebel yells.

Release Notes on Restoration

If....
If.... is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.66:1. On widescreen televisions, black bars will appear on the left and right of the image to maintain the proper screen format. Approved by cinematographer Miroslav Ondříček and assistant editor Ian Rakoff, this high-definition digital transfer was created on a Spirit Datacine from an original 35mm interpositive. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, warps, jitter, and flicker were manually removed using MTI's DRS system and Pixel Farm's PFClean system, while Digital Vision's DVNR system was used for small dirt, grain, and noise reduction.

The original monaural soundtrack was remastered at 24-bit from the magnetic tracks. Clicks, thumps, hiss, and hum were manually removed using Pro Tools HD. Crackle was attenuated using AudioCube’s integrated workstation.
