Les Films de Mon Oncle
Directed by: Jacques Tati
Featuring: Jacques Tati

Jacques Tati’s gloriously choreographed, nearly wordless comedies about confusion in an age of high technology reached their apotheosis with PlayTime. For this monumental achievement, a nearly three-year-long, bank-breaking production, Tati again thrust the lovably old-fashioned Monsieur Hulot, along with a host of other lost souls, into a baffling modern world, this time Paris. With every inch of its superwide frame crammed with hilarity and inventiveness, PlayTime is a lasting record of a modern era tiptoeing on the edge of oblivion.

Release Notes on Restoration

PlayTime is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. On standard televisions, the image will appear letterboxed. Undertaken by Les Films de Mon Oncle with the support of Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée, this 4K digital restoration was created from a 6.5K scan of the original 65mm negative, a 1967 internegative, and a 2002 interpositive at Arane-Gulliver in Clichy, France; the film was restored in 4K resolution at L'Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, Italy. The 3.0 surround soundtrack was remastered at 24-bit at L.E. Diapason in Épinay-sur-Seine, France, from Tati's final 70mm 6-track mix.
