Directed by: Marcel Camus
Winner of both the Academy Award for best foreign-language film and the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, Marcel Camus’ Black Orpheus (Orfeu negro) brings the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to the twentieth-century madness of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. With its eye-popping photography and ravishing, epochal soundtrack, Black Orpheus was an international cultural event, and it kicked off the bossa nova craze that set hi-fis across America spinning.

Release Notes on Restoration

Black Orpheus
Black Orpheus is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.33:1. On widescreen televisions, black bars will appear on the left and right of the image to maintain the proper screen format. On the DVD edition the image has been slightly windowboxed to ensure that the maximum image is visible on all monitors. This new high-definition digital transfer was created on a Spirit HD Datacine from a 35mm interpositive. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, warps, jitter, and flicker were manually removed using MTI's DRS system and Pixel Farm's PFClean system, while Digital Vision's DVNR system was used for small dirt, grain, and noise reduction.

The monaural soundtrack is remastered at 24-bit from a 35mm optical track print. Clicks, thumps hiss, and hum were manually removed using Pro Tools HD. Crackle attenuated using AudioCube's integrated audio workstation.
