Before he took you to a galaxy far, far away, before he brought you face-to-face with living, breathing prehistoric beasts, Dennis Muren, the future nine-time Oscar-winning visual-effects artist (Star Wars, Jurassic Park), joined forces with a group of talented young filmmakers to create an homage to the creature features of yore in the eerie monster mash Equinox. Deep within the woods and canyons of California, four teenagers happen upon an ancient book containing the secrets of a strange, malevolent world that coexists with that of mankind. This $6,500-budget wonder (originally called The Equinox . . . A Journey into the Supernatural) was picked up for distribution by producer Jack H. Harris (The Blob), who shot new footage for the film with writer-director Jack Woods and released it in 1970 as Equinox. Since then, the film has gained a passionate cult following and inspired succeeding generations of horror/fantasy filmmakers.

Equinox
Equinox and The Equinox . . . A Journey into the Supernatural are presented in their original aspect ratios of 1.33:1. On widescreen televisions, black bars will appear on the left and right of the image to maintain the proper screen format. This new high-definition digital transfer of Equinox was created on a Spirit Datacine from a 35mm color negative and a 35mm optical track negative from the Academy-restored original 16mm blowup of the film. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, and scratches were removed using both Digital Vision’s ASCIII Advanced Scratch and Dirt Removal System and MTI’s Digital Restoration System. The Equinox . . . A Journey into the Supernatural was created on a Cintel C-Reality telecine with Oliver Electronic Wetgate processing from the 16mm duplicate negative and 16mm composite print of recuts, both provided by codirector Dennis Muren. Two film elements were necessary as one was missing all of the effects sequences (cut for inclusion in a show reel) and the other was personally trimmed by Muren many years ago. In addition, a fan-circulated VHS provided the final master material for three brief excerpts that were missing from both film elements. To maintain optimal image quality through the compression process, the picture on this dual-layer DVD-9 has been encoded at the highest-possible bit rate for the quantity of materials included.
The soundtracks were mastered at 24-bit from the optical pickups off the 16mm composite print, and audio restoration tools were used to reduce clicks, pops, hiss, and crackle. The Dolby Digital 1.0 signal will be directed to the center channel on 5.1-channel sound systems, but some viewers may prefer to switch to two-channel playback for a wider dispersal of the mono sound.
