Directed by: Alain Resnais
A cornerstone film of the French New Wave, Alain Resnais' first feature is one of the most influential films of all time. A French actress (Emmanuelle Riva) and a Japanese architect (Eiji Okada) engage in a brief, intense affair in postwar Hiroshima, their consuming fascination impelling them to exorcise their own scarred memories of love and suffering. Utilizing an innovative flashback structure and an Academy Award-nominated® screenplay by novelist Marguerite Duras, Resnais delicately weaves past and present, personal pain and public anguish, in this moody masterwork.

Release Notes on Restoration
Hiroshima mon Amour
Hiroshima mon amour is presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1. On widescreen televisions black bars will appear on the left and right of the image to maintain the proper screen format. This new high-definition digital transfer was created from the 35mm composite fine grain. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, and scratches were removed using the MTI Digital Restoration System. The soundtrack was mastered at 24-bit from the optical fine grain; audio restoration tools were used to reduce clicks, pops, hiss, and crackle. The Dolby Digital 1.0 signal will be directed to the center channel on 5.1-channel sound systems, but some viewers may prefer to switch to two-channel playback for a wider dispersal of the mono sound.
