Terence Stamp is Willie, a gangster’s henchman turned “supergrass” (informer) trying to live in peaceful hiding in a remote Spanish village. Sun-dappled bliss turns to nerve-racking suspense, however, when two hit men—played by a soulless John Hurt and a youthful, loose-cannon Tim Roth—come a-calling to bring Willie back for execution. This stylish early gem from Stephen Frears boasts terrific performances from a roster of England’s best hard-boiled actors, music by Eric Clapton and virtuoso flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía, and ravishing photography of its desolate Spanish locations—a splendid backdrop for a rather sordid story.

Release Notes on Restoration

The Hit
The Hit is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. On standard 4:3 televisions, the image will appear letterboxed. On widescreen televisions, the image should fill the screen. Approved by director of photography Mike Molloy, this new high-definition digital transfer was created from a 35mm interpositive scanned in 2K resolution on a Spirit 4K at Midnight Transfer, London. 2K color correction was done using Assimilate’s Scratch system, and dirt and scratch removal was done using the PFClean system at CineImage, London. This corrected data was output to high-definition tape at On Sight, London. Addition instances of dirt, debris, and scratches were removed using the MTI Digital Restoration System.

Presented in its original monaural format, the soundtrack was remastered at 24-bit from the 35mm magnetic audio track at Sync Sound Audio, London. Pops, crackle, hiss, and hum were reduced with an array of audio restoration techniques.
